Default 3 IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS NOBODY EVER TAUGHT YOU

Imagine for a second that I’m your father. I know that may bring up all sorts of awkward and unpleasant connotations, but stay with me here...
Now, let’s pretend that we’re having one of those intimate heart-to-heart conversations that we all ideally imagine having with our fathers....
Let’s pretend that I turn to you, my lovely son/daughter/ambiguously-gendered-person-that-I-don’t-fully-understand-but-still-love-and-accept-unconditionally, and share with you, in all my fatherly wisdom, the three most important life skills that no one has ever told you before.

Interesting. I'm not sure these 3 life skills can be "taught." Funny thing is I think at least 2 of these so called skills develop very early in life, as a toddler even. I've been struggling with all 3 for over 6 decades and still can't overcome. Lol.

A very dear friend was another therapist. She taught me an invaluable technique to use in counseling, but I also found it useful in daily life. She called it "awfulizing." It works like this: when something is worrying you, stop and think about the worst thing that could happen. Now, how would you deal with that? Would do you do this? Or maybe you could try this? In other words, work through the worst possible outcomes and how you would respond to them. Then, when something actually does go wrong, you are already prepared to handle it; instead of having a meltdown, you have a plan to take care of it.

"Awfulizing" seems to be a great technique. Things don't seem as bad if you take time to mentally play out the likely outcomes. Flukes of the moment don't seem so bad once placed in context of a longer term. I like the idea. Will try it out.

For the most part, people in my life have proven themselves to be disappointing in every turn. So I just ask myself, what would I do differently? Usually the answer is that I will keep on doing my best at what I would be doing anyway. People disappoint, but do not surprise, if one is carefully paying attention.

In my case, things I might do differently are hampered by my hearing loss, so there's that limitation.
