Default Leprosy still lurks in United States, study says

Leprosy is a disease most people think ended in the Middle Ages, but a new study shows that it's not a thing of the past. Mayo Clinic researchers wanted to understand how common it was in their clinic after a patient was diagnosed with the disease in March 2017. In the clinic's electronic health records, they found nine patients diagnosed with leprosy over a 23-year period.
The study authors emphasized that, though it's rare, the disease should still be considered when diagnosing patients.

The study found only 9 patients with leprosy over a 23 yr. period. Good news: 6 of the 9 patients treated in their clinic were not born in the U.S. and 2 of the 3 who were born in U.S. had traveled extensively throughout the world. Not sure this is anything to lose sleep over. Sadly, my only leprosy reference point is the movie Ben-Hur, where one of the main characters visits an isolated "leper colony" to deliver food to his mother and sister who have been stricken with the disease. This scene sticks in my mind because it seemed the people in the leper colony were treated so cruel--isolated and essentially shunned.
