Default High Blood Pressure Linked To This Surprising Nutrient Deficiency

According to new nutritional science, there is great news for the more than 100 million people suffering from high blood pressure (in the United States alone). Research shows that a zinc deficiency may be the missing link behind the condition known as hypertension. The new study published in the American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology found that a zinc deficiency can cause the kidneys to absorb more sodium than they otherwise would, thereby potentially increasing blood pressure by throwing off the body’s delicate mineral balance.

My bp plummeted with weight loss years ago and has stayed low. However, a friend's husband has been struggling with hypertension and I sent her this article. (He could drop some weight too, but we don't say that, do we)?

Zinc is a critical mineral, affecting hundreds of enzyme functions. It is also necessary for a strong immune system, and proper wound healing. It enhances the way the body uses vitamin A and folate. However, it does compete with copper for absorption. So, supplementing with large doses can cause a copper deficiency.

Advice, please. The AREDS formula ("PreserVision") combines both in their capsule. I took the last one this morning and today I'm putting together my own formulation. They advise taking twice a day. I can do that... and would you suggest the full dose of zinc in the morning and copper in the evening (or vice-versa)?

I take an 11 mg. zinc tablet whenever I consume the most protein, and for me, that's most often my evening meal. The amino acids in a high protein diet chelate to zinc and make it lots easier to absorb. Also, a little red wine also enhances zinc absorption. So, protein and red wine sounds more like an evening meal than morning. As you've wisely noted, the main thing is to take the two at separate times.
