Flaxseeds are powerful healing foods that help regulate cholesterol levels, hormones and even blood pressure. So it’s not surprising that millions of people around the world load up on flaxseeds in their daily smoothie or sprinkled on their breakfast cereal on a daily basis. But, there is another reason to start eating flaxseeds if you’re not already: according to scientists they can also help with weight loss.

I do consume flaxseeds and posted a breakfast recipe in the Kitchen forum. I find it annoying, though, that virtually every food someone promotes as healthful has to mention weight loss. If every "superfood" induced weight loss, some of us would be walking talking skeletons!

"Weight loss" is the new, key buzz phrase to sell everything. Some pharmaceutical commercials even add that their medication may promote weight loss. Sad. Flaxseeds are enormously healthy, but my naturopath told me most are rancid because of improper storage. She recommended keeping unused flaxseed, especially ground flaxseed in the "freezer," not the fridge, but the freezer.

Mr. Wizard, you are so reliably helpful when it comes to this sort of offhand advice that no one else informs us of. I've been keeping flaxseed in the refrigerator but tonight it's getting moved to the freezer!

Several years ago, I remember Udo Erasmus stressing that flax seeds and especially flax seed oil are particularly susceptible to rancidity, and that proper storage is essential. This is because of the molecular configuration of the unsaturated fatty acid in flax; the exact reason why it is so beneficial is the reason why it is so fragile when exposed to oxygen in the air.

So what harm am I doing to myself by continuing to consume my refrigerated ground flaxseed?

Maurya: Great info. Now I have a better understanding of what makes flaxseed so fragile. Thanks.

As with most seeds, the fresher they are consumed after being ground, and the colder they are kept following the grinding, the better.
