    Hearing on Vaccines and Outbreaks
    (no author given)

The Senate Health Committee held a hearing to examine vaccines & preventable outbreaks. Testifying were public health experts and officials, as well as an 18-year-old high school student who grew up in a household led by parents who did not allow their children to receive standard vaccines but had decided to get immunized for hepatitis, influenza and other vaccine-preventable diseases after reaching adulthood. The witnesses talked about the threat of anti-vaccine rhetoric and the recent measles outbreak that has resulted from pockets of parents in Washington, California and elsewhere who have refused to immunize their children against the once-erradicated (sic) disease.

Below are excerpts from transcript, found at the link below, of comments from Senator Rand Paul, who according to all reports I’ve read was the only dissenting voice, though he clarifies he is vaccinated and vaccinates his kids. As you may know, Paul is a physician.

“Yet it is wrong to say that there are no risks to vaccines. Even the government admits that children are sometimes injured by vaccines. Since 1980, 84 million dollars has been paid out by the vaccine injury compensation program. Despite the government admitting to and paying $4 billion for vaccine injuries, no informed consent is used or required when you vaccinate your child. This may be the only medical procedure in today’s medical world where informed consent is not required. . . .

“As we contemplate forcing parents to choose this and that the xe in (sicremember this is a transcript), it’s important to remember that force is not consistent with the American story, nor with the liberty that our forefathers say when they came to America. . . . I’m not here to say don’t vaccinate your kids, but I still don’t favor giving up on liberty for a false sense of security.”
