LOS ANGELES, CA — Thirty students at the private Harvard-Westlake School have become sickened with whooping cough in part of what health department officials say are three clusters of the outbreak scattered countywide.
The highly contagious illness appear to spreading among middle-schoolers and teens who share classrooms and carpools, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
...Asked about vaccine policies, Engelberg said only 18 of Harvard- Westlake's roughly 1,600 students have medical exemptions allowing them to opt out of immunizations. None of those children have contracted pertussis, he said.

I understand that the pertussis vaccine has been ineffective for some time during the recent past anyway.

As Islander noted, the pertussis vaccine's efficacy ranges between 30% - 66% effectiveness. The pertussis microbe is highly unpredictable because it continues to evolve over time, like the influenza virus. This makes developing a vaccine that will be effective over time very difficult. The microbes have managed to essentially evade both the whole cell DTP vaccine and the "less toxic" acellular DTaP vaccine. The vaccine is only good for 2 to 5 years, and then up to at least six (6) "booster" shots may be required through the teenage years. Drug companies and doctors continue to market the vaccine, despite knowing it is highly ineffective.

PSA from Captain Obvious: A healthy, unvaccinated person, who is not carrying any disease, whether or not there is a vaccine that supposedly is effective against that disease, cannot possibly infect other people, vaccinated or otherwise. The widespread fear mongering thrives on the notion that every non-vaccinated person is a carrier of some disease.
