Default London HIV patient becomes world's second AIDS cure hope

LONDON, March 4 (Reuters) - An HIV-positive man in Britain has become the second known adult worldwide to be cleared of the AIDS virus after he received a bone marrow transplant from an HIV-resistant donor, his doctors said.
Almost three years after he received bone marrow stem cells from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists HIV infection - and more than 18 months after he came off antiretroviral drugs - highly sensitive tests still show no trace of the man’s previous HIV infection.

GREAT NEWS for the 39 million people worldwide living with HIV as of 2017, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). While HIV doesn't headline the news much anymore, it remains the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S. for people between the ages of 25 and 44, according to WHO.

What intrigues me is how do they find these people with the rare genetic mutation?

I caught a brief discussion during drive time on the relationship between AI and medicine. Apparently AI can do an incredibly rapid diagnostic DNA search to uncover abnormalities such as this.

In the case of AIDS, people with the HIV resistant genetic mutation are identified through a huge "worldwide" network, known as HIVNET. For over 20 yrs., experts from around the world have been collaborating and sharing info. on people who don't get infected, even though they engage in behaviors that make them vulnerable. They have a database on commercial sex workers in Asia, homosexual men in Africa, etc. who all engage with people infected with AIDS, but yet these people don't get infected. They've identified the gene that shuts down the receptors (chemokines) on the cells, thus blocking the HIV virus from entering the cell and infecting the host. The gene is common among Northern Europeans and rare among Africans and Asians. Over 19 countries--with hundreds of ongoing or completed AIDS clinical trials--have participated in HIVNET for more than 20 years.
