Default Two Servings A Week Of Mushrooms Protect Against Memory Loss

Mushrooms can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 64 per cent—as WDDTY's March issue revealed—and they can also keep you mentally sharp as you get older. Two servings a week reduce the risk of mild cognitive decline (MCI)—such as occasional memory loss or concentration lapses—by around 50 per cent. MCI is generally seen as early-stage dementia.

Although nobody is quite sure why mushrooms have such a therapeutic effect, researchers think it's to do with a compound called ergothioneine that is in most types of mushroom.

Wow! That's awesome. Thanks, Julieanne. We get shiitake at the organic farmers' market, and my husband loves them and eats 200 grams a week, spread out. I've been avoiding them lately. Maybe I should reconsider.

3/4 cup of cooked mushrooms is quite a lot, when you see how much they shrink when cooked. I eat one or two raw mushrooms a day in my salad, which is probably not enough to make a difference. Mushies on toast for breakfast tomorrow!

I used to buy mushrooms frequently when our supermarket was in the habit of putting ready-to-expire vegetables on a markdown table. I'd sauté those mushrooms in butter, pour them into a one-cup container and freeze them. Since the supermarket sold out to corporatism, there are no longer any markdown options for consumers and I really can't afford fresh ones! Maybe I should prioritize that...
