Default Judge rules New York county can’t ban unvaccinated children from schools, parks

    Frances Stead Sellers
    April 6, 2019

Ten days after a New York county banned unvaccinated children from public places in an effort to stem the rise of measles cases, a state judge put the injunction on hold. “Children are hereby permitted to return to their respective schools forthwith and otherwise to assemble in public places,” Judge Rolf Thorsen wrote in his Friday decision.

The author of this Washington Post article did not stop at reporting the facts, unfortunately; she also includes misinformation about 'community immunity' and mis-characterizes those who aren't in favor of vaccines.

Sadly, the article is paywalled for me, but google a topic and one can usually find a parallel story — like this one: https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/05/healt...ing/index.html

    WaPo
is usually accurate... but this is such a contentious topic that I'm not surprised if some bias crept in.

I don't have a subscription, but I got to it from another even more biased article that I somehow ran into here: https://splinternews.com/ny-judge-ru...ead-1833861419 (not a site I frequent). Maybe if you click the WaPo link from within that article it will work?

Nope, you have to subscribe. I had a subscription at one time because I like their depth & breadth of coverage, but couldn't afford to keep it up despite my wish to support good journalism. They still send me multiple articles daily, but except for the occasional opinion piece, most are paywalled. However, they give me a sense of what's happening of importance in the world. Often another site, like NPR, will pick up the same story… Or I can Google the topic as I did with Julieanne's skin to skin sleeping articles. And if one wants to bother, one can read it via "private browsing."

IMHO, the judge made the right call. To deny children access to church, school, & other public spaces, and threaten parents with a $500 fine and/or up to 6 months in prison were bridges too far! Perhaps, the clairvoyant judge realized this ban could open the door for others, like one on mumps. Mumps outbreaks are on the rise too! Last week, Temple Univ. reported 67 cases of mumps on campus, and growing. Texas reported the largest number of mumps cases since 1994, while other states are seeing increases too. The judge saw a mumps ban coming too, and decided to nip it all in the bud.

Yep, mumps, the illness that has caused the US Navy to quarantine an entire ship full of completely vaccinated sailors who now have the mumps. You should see the circuitous reasoning that has resulted from that one.

Lol. I read about that quarantine ship of sailors with the mumps. Can you imagine hundreds of young, virile, horny sailor men & sailor women who can't make their "port calls" for weeks. Bet, the onshore "professional escorts" economy is taking a beating too! I shouldn't joke but this is rather hilarious.

Lol. All these vaccines are now proving to be ineffective. Whooping cough vaxx hasn't workedfor a couple of years and no one seems to get it! "But they've all been vccinated!" Except for that group of Orthodox Jews. I think those kids are lucky. If they all got the wild measles virus, they'll be mildly sick for a week (like we were) and carry a lifetime immunity!

Merck has been fighting a lawsuit over its ineffective mumps vaccine (part of MMR) since 2010. There have been far more cases of the mumps than measles. According to CDC data, between 2016 - 2017, there were nearly 12,000 mumps cases reported, compared to only 206 cases of the measles during the same period. For 2019, over 400 mumps cases have been reported to CDC.

IIRC, a case of mumps is far more serious to adult man than a case of measles.

You're right, a male contracting the mumps after puberty may experience swelling of the testicles. It's called orchitis. Also, females having the mumps after puberty may experience swelling of the ovaries. It's called oophoritis.

Years ago, my adult son and his pregnant wife happened to be visiting us when he came down with the mumps. He stayed in bed as long as was necessary, to protect 'the family jewels', and they went on to have two more children. I understand a man is less likely to experience orchitis with mumps if he adheres strictly to a resting regimen. Does anyone know if that's generally true?

You raise an excellent question, Pattypans. I didn't find any research that suggested a "resting regimen" would prevent a post-pubertal man from experiencing orchitis. However, a resting regimen was the recommended treatment for a post-pubertal man diagnosed with orchitis. Usually one of the testicles swells and resting with a cool compress helps with discomfort. The virus that causes the mumps may also in rare cases attack the testicles in post-pubertal males, the ovaries in post-pubertal females, the brain (encephalitis), the spinal cord (meningitis), the pancreas, and already arthritic joints. So, I'm not sure adhering strictly to a resting regimen would be enough to prevent such attacks. People generally rest a lot because the virus makes them feel yucky.
