Default A Mysterious Infection, Spanning the Globe in a Climate of Secrecy (Candida auris)

    April 6, 2019

The rise of Candida auris embodies a serious and growing public health threat: drug-resistant germs.

Last May, an elderly man was admitted to the Brooklyn branch of Mount Sinai Hospital for abdominal surgery. A blood test revealed that he was infected with a newly discovered germ as deadly as it was mysterious. Doctors swiftly isolated him in the intensive care unit.
The germ, a fungus called Candida auris, preys on people with weakened immune systems, and it is quietly spreading across the globe. Over the last five years, it has hit a neonatal unit in Venezuela, swept through a hospital in Spain, forced a prestigious British medical center to shut down its intensive care unit, and taken root in India, Pakistan and South Africa.

So, candida auris is one of many types of candida. Candida albican is the most common candida type, which most people have in their gut flora. The problems begin when candida overgrows, like in a vaginal yeast infection or as in oral thrush. We frequently discuss the benefits of eating plenty of "fermented foods." But, that's exactly what you DON'T want to do if you have candida overgrowth. Fermented foods feed the good bacteria, as well as the bad. So, you don't want to over indulge in fermented foods if you have an overgrowth. Also, grapefruit seeds--not grape seeds, but grape-fruit seeds--as in grapefruit seed extract (GSE) has shown the ability to successfully fight candida. Since the experts claim candida auris is a drug-resistant germ, they may want to give GSE a try.

I think somewhere in one of these two stories, someone mentioned that sunlight was possibly the only disinfectant for Candida auris.

The CDC reports 309 cases of candida auris in New York City alone. Further, the CDC reports that 30 percent to 60 percent of people infected with C. auris have died. Most people, according to CDC, infected with C. auris have a compromised immune system, and/or are diabetic. That's right, diabetics are at high risk of contracting C. auris. CDC needs to do more work to determine how the infection is spread, but they know it can passed from person-to-person contact, and from touching objects or equipment that can remain contaminated for days. Where's the public health emergency ban on this stuff?

An array of ultraviolet lamps might work here. Expensive, but definitely worth it.

Excellent question. We are bombarded with propaganda about the "emergency" of "deadly" measles, a mild short-lived childhood disease, yet when a genuine, authentic public emergency occurs, all information is dialed down. Mustn't alarm the public! Actually that's just as well, since there is no proven treatment or cure for the condition… and that's pretty terrifying.
