Default Most Teachers Don't Teach Climate Change; 4 In 5 Parents Wish They Did

More than 80% of parents in the U.S. support the teaching of climate change. And that support crosses political divides, according to the results of an exclusive new NPR/Ipsos poll: Whether they have children or not, two-thirds of Republicans and 9 in 10 Democrats agree that the subject needs to be taught in school.
A separate poll of teachers found that they are even more supportive, in theory — 86% agree that climate change should be taught.
These polls are among the first to gauge public and teacher opinion on how climate change should be taught to the generation that in the coming years will face its intensifying consequences: children.

This is a highly complex issue. Most parents may support teaching climate change, but they can't agree on "the facts" that should be taught. Basically parents are in 1 of 2 camps: #1 climate change is "primarily man-made, or #2 climate change is primarily due to natural causes. Teachers are also conflicted. A joint survey by the Nat'l Center for Science Education (NCSE) and Penn State's Survey Research Center found that almost one-third of teachers held contradictory views of the causes of climate change. Bottom line: parents can't agree on the facts; some teachers are conflicted, and whole communities, school boards, and regions can't agree. So, why would a teacher willingly delve into such controversial, muddy waters. They are already under-paid and under-appreciated.

It seems hopeless, doesn't it? And yet 16-year-old Greta Thunberg has been named Sweden's "Woman of the Year" for her activism on climate change. Shame on us for our ignorance. Can you believe there are still some deniers, some who claim it's all a hoax, some who insist that the earth is actually cooling... I just wring my hands. I can't see how this country can ever unite on the greatest crisis that humankind will ever face.

Teach your own children... do what you can... live a day at a time.

    BTW, here's Greta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFkQSGyeCWg

I'm encouraged by the young people. Your story above about Greta Thunberg...case in point. They're not waiting for the "adults" to get their act together, they're taking matters into their own hands. After all, climate change will impact them more than us old folks, and they know it. April 20, 2019, millions of young people around the world celebrated Earth Day. Yes, the youngins give me hope!!

Aye, indeed. I wish there were more of that European enthusiasm and leadership here at home (though of course, as we've seen, they are taught climate change and our children, by and large, are not). We did see the potential of youth leadership after the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas school shooting... but in a country that pledges allegiance to the NRA, they're not apt to get far.

Oy. It was just my pitiful attempt at sarcasm. What has been seen cannot be unseen. Please ignore. Sorry, not sorry.
