Default Elderberries Could Help Minimise Flu Symptoms

    University of Sydney
    April 24 2019

A group of chemical and biomolecular engineers has determined that elderberries can help the fight against influenza, by reducing symptoms and severity of the virus.
Folk medicines and herbal products have been used for millennia to combat a whole range of ailments, at times to the chagrin of modern scientists who have struggled to explain their medicinal benefits.

I've heard of the power of elderberries. I have none myself but have access to them. I've debated making elderberry syrup. It's kind of labor-intensive. Since I never get the flu, nor have any family members nearby, I haven't bothered... but it's good to know.

I've given my grandchildren an elderberry extract, called Sambucus, for years. They were coming home from daycare and school with coughs and colds every other day, it seemed. The Sambucus elderberry extract has worked well, significantly decreasing their sniffles, coughs, and colds.

It's good to see old-fashioned remedies backed by science, but I'm curious - who pays for these studies?

Excellent question!! In this case, the University of Sydney and its industry partners paid for the study. Sydney University lists about a dozen or so partners. Sometimes I forget to pay attention to who's paying for these studies because from experience we know that can weigh heavily on the final results of the study.

Yes, Julieanne's question served as a reminder that we should always pay attention to the sponsors of these studies because experience shows that, generally, study conclusions favor the sponsors'/buyers' interests.

I asked the question because my son and I were talking about this a few days ago. There is little to no profit to be made from natural remedies that can't be patented, yet there are a number of trials and studies etc on herbs, minerals, vitamins etc. Is there an easy way to find out who pays for these?

Yeah, thinking about "...the University of Sydney and its industry partners..." So some patent medicine industries are behind the trials. I'm thinking the FDA won't permit them to advertise the health benefits of Sambucus, but some health-oriented site like Mercola, or maybe a supplement company, will carry the flag for them. You think? There has to be a pony in there for somebody!

There is no easy way to determine who pays for nutritional studies. In fact, the food & beverage industries intentionally make it difficult for us to determine that they're behind many of these studies. In some instances, a company will hire a non-profit, seemingly independent company to conduct the study so the study appears to be independent, when it's anything but. A New York University professor, Dr. Marion Nestle tracked 168 nutritional studies in 2015 that were paid for by the food & beverage industries, and found that 156 studies out of the 168 showed biased results that favored the sponsor's interests. You have raised a very insightful issue that I'm not sure we'll ever be able to completely get a handle on. But, you have certainly reminded us to be ever vigilant.
