    Survey finds exceptional blood-sugar control with few complications; researchers call for clinical trials


    Very-low-carbohydrate diets can improve blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes, with low rates of hypoglycemia and other complications, according to an online patient survey. The researchers now call for controlled clinical trials of this approach.

The researchers, led by Belinda Lennerz, MD, PhD, and David Ludwig, MD, PhD, of Boston Children's Hospital, now call for controlled clinical trials of this approach.

    So, the participants were essentially on the ketogenic diet, averaging 36 grams of carbohydrates per day. This seems exceedingly strict for kids, as one medium banana is 27 carbo grams. So, type 1 diabetic children would essentially have to forego fruit on this very-low carb diet.
