Default Starbucks is testing a reusable cup program at London’s Gatwick Airport

    JUN 10 2019

Customers at its South Terminal location will be able to either request a free reusable cup or pay 5 pence (6 cents) for a paper cup. If customers opt for the reusable cup, they will be able to drop it off at five locations throughout the terminal before boarding their flights, the coffee giant announced in a press release Sunday.
Last year, Starbucks implemented a paper cup fee at all of its U.K.cafes. The proceeds from this charge have been donated to the U.K. environmental charity Hubbub, which is funding the reusable cup trial and other environmental projects.

It sounds like a great idea, but I would like to know more about the sterilization process.

What sterilization process? They are just washed and returned, which is pretty much the system that operated when I was younger, but with china cups. Seemed to work just fine, and also created jobs.

"What sterilization process?" Well, that's the $64.00 question, as the article is not all that clear. If the cup material is impervious; either ceramic or plastic, then yes, it could be washed. But who is going to provide cost-free ceramic cups that can be either smashed or stolen? And if plastic, or some kind of chemically pressed reusable paper, then that seems toxic.

If OTOH, the material is in fact somewhat porous, then some form of soaking in a safe, sterile solution would be needed. And this idea might only be do-able in the kind of airport scenario where it is currently being tested???

Cups and mugs in restaurants, cafes, diners, are not subject to sterilization. I don't see the difference... except that the cups will need to be collected.
