Default Forget 10,000 Steps, Just 4,400 A Day Will Help You Live Longer

Forget the 10,000 steps dictum—you can get most of the health benefits by walking around 4,400 steps a day.
You'll get more benefit by walking a little further still—to around 7,700 steps a day—but after that you're just walking for walking's sake, say researchers from Harvard Medical School.

I likely get those 4400 steps a day between house, barn and garden. But even moving from my desk or computer to the kitchen means walking the entire length of the house, which happens multiple times a day (like when I forget to bring my coffee). Then there are the stairs to the second floor, and the cellar stairs...

I'm very suspicious of this study. As we all know here at HH, mortality is influenced by numerous factors, including exercise (walking). I researched further and found that this study piggybacked off another Women's Health Study, where some of the women had been taking vit. E and low-dose aspirin while participating in an earlier study. **Note: Want to bet the vit. E was synthetic? And, we all know low dose aspirin has been shown to be virtually worthless for older people. My biggest problem with the study is it did not appear to control for diet, lifestyle (smokers, etc.), sleeping habits, OTC medication, pharmaceutical meds, etc. etc. etc. I am further distrustful of the results of this study after learning that the earlier recommendation to take 10,000 steps per day may have been based on a Japanese company's marketing scheme for a pedometer called "amanpo-kei, which translates to 10,000 steps meter" in Japanese." Caveat Emptor!!!

I'm just trying to keep up with ALL the brilliant minds here at HH. Actually, it was you, Julieanne, who made me even more inquisitive about these studies when you raised the question a few months ago about who pays for these studies. Since then, I've become even more mindful of trying to get behind the "who's and why's" of these studies. Thanks for touching that nerve.
