Default Scientists declare nearly 400 medical practices 'ineffective'

Researchers have pinpointed almost 400 common medical practices that are actually ineffective, a new study shows.
They hope this research, published Tuesday in eLife, will push for the de-adoption of these ineffective standards commonly known as medical reversals.
"We wanted to build on these and other efforts to provide a larger and more comprehensive list for clinicians and researchers to guide practice as they care for patients more effectively and economically," Diana Herrera-Perez, a researcher at Oregon Health & Science University and study lead author, said in a news release.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Interesting to see that most of the medical reversal were based on studies done on participants from high-income countries. This reminded me that far too many of our clinical trials exclude women and minorities. Historically, the FDA, in the 1960's, kept women participation in clinical trials to a minimum because of several unfounded fears. In the 70's, pregnant women were excluded from medical research. Even today, the National Institutes of Health admits its clinical trials include far too few women, minorities, and low-income people.

Did I miss something? I expected to see some of the procedures mentioned, or a link within the article.

There was a link--in the middle of a sentence--called, eLife. But don't waste your time clicking on it. The 396 medical reversals cover the full gamut of medical specialties from psychiatry and pediatrics to oncology and even vitamins & supplements. There's really not a lot of definition.

With one exception (there may have been more) : Puerto Rican women were treated as guinea pigs in testing oral contraceptives, sometimes with appalling results. Don't know if the story is still available, given all the cuts made by Google.
