Default Bill Gates-Backed Startup Makes Avocados Last Twice As Long

A plant-derived coating could help fight food waste.

    Avocado lovers, rejoice!

Apeel Sciences, a Gates Foundation-funded startup, has developed a powder to help keep produce like avocados fresh for longer periods of time and reduce food waste. Avocados treated with Apeel Sciences’ spray, which launched this week in Costcos and Harps Food Stores in the Midwest, will have double the ripe time.

Can we trust this stuff? I sleuthed a bit, and could not find an ingredients list. Lots of mentions of 'plant-derived', lipids from peels, etc., but no actual list.

Apparently the product has been approved for use on certified organic produce, but that doesn't make me trust it any more than if it hadn't been. It's edible (so is glyphosate, in some people's eyes!) and will be used on fruits and vegetables that are eaten unpeeled, as well as on avocados. There's an article on Weston Price Foundation that enumerates some of the questions the use of this products raises. It can be found here: https://www.westonaprice.org/health-...eel-appealing/

My avocados already last forever. Why is it necessary to "double" the ripe time of any fruit? According to the Environmental Working Group's annual review of chemical-laden fruits & veggies, avocados is in the top 15 group of cleanest fruits & veggies. Do we need to dust it with a "powder" to make it last longer. What's the old saying..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I automatically don't trust anything connected to Bill Gates, so I was suspicious of this. If the main purpose is to prevent food waste, I can't disagree with that, but it does raise a lot of questions.

Mr Wiz, the product may be intended for retailers rather than customers - only guessing. My avos last quite a while, but I have seen over-ripe ones in the market and I suppose they get thrown out.

So, retailers and suppliers get to dust this powder on my fruit before I purchase it. This is even worse. I thought customers would have the option to use or not use the powder. They've completely taken away that option for the consumer. According to recent surveys, we still waste most food from our homes and restaurants (think: All You Can Eat Buffet) than do grocers and farmers. I still marvel at the enormous amounts of food people leave behind in restaurants.

And, ladies and gentlemen, as a bonus, "Edipeel" even comes on produce with certified organic labels! (And my guess is they don't have to mention its existence anyplace on the produce, though I couldn't find this information.) It's like 1984 Newspeak, isn't it?

Just one more reason to wash avocados. Last December, 2018, I OPed an HH thread, https://www.hawkeshealth.net/communi...cados+listeria, that stated to make sure to wash all avocado skins due to various pathogens such as salmonella, listeria, etc., and who knows if washing the skin would do any good if Gates is involved, as the USDA organic label is already being much compromised and corrupted as it is. https://www.newsweek.com/fda-avocado...soning-1270197

I wash any food, like avocado, melon, lemon or lime that I will cut into with a knife. But what does Bill Gates have to do with any of this?
