Default Austrian parliament backs EU's first total ban of weedkiller glyphosate

VIENNA, July 2 (Reuters) - Austria's lower house of parliament passed a bill on Tuesday banning all uses of the weedkiller glyphosate, the first time a European Union country has taken such strong action against the chemical over concerns that it can cause cancer.
Other EU countries have passed partial bans of glyphosate, developed by Bayer-owned Monsanto, although France has lowered its ambitions on a ban, highlighting its usefulness in agriculture. Austria has embraced organic farming more than other EU member state.
"The scientific evidence of the plant poison's carcinogenic effect is increasing. It is our responsibility to ban this poison from our environment," the leader of Austria's Social Democrats, Pamela Rendi-Wagner, said in a statement.

Prediction: Huge legal payouts are being granted in favor of plaintiffs claiming harm as a result of glyphosate. Countries failing to ban outright this herbicide may also find themselves adjoined to these lawsuits as co-conspirators. Since acquiring glyphosate-maker Monsanto 13 months ago in June 2018, Bayer has been hit with over $2.5 Billion in legal damages. The number of plaintiffs alleging harm from glyphosate is now at about 13,000 and growing. The Bayer legal team has admitted it is having difficulty keeping up with all the lawsuits and appeals. Some Bayer investors see a no-win situation and is encouraging Bayer to proffer a "global settlement" on all lawsuits, which some analysts estimate will cost Bayer more than $10 Billion.

Thanks for sharing this comprehensive lists of countries that have restricted/banned glyphosate. Sad to see the U.S. is not on the list, although 22 states have taken steps to restrict the use. But, as I said in my post above, I predict that more and more countries, cities & municipalities will begin to ban glyphosate as more plaintiffs are awarded damages for harm caused by glyphosate. If countries fail to ban, they may find themselves joined in lawsuits as co-conspirators. At this point, it is difficult for any country to claim ignorance regarding the harm glyphosate can cause.
