Default Heart Rhythm Drugs Increase Risk Of Dangerous Falls

    August 5 2019

Some of the world's most common drugs to treat irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) are dramatically increasing the rate of falls and fainting in older patients. More than 20 per cent of cases are resulting in a fracture or major head injury. Beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers can increase the risk of a fall, but the biggest culprit was amiodarone (marketed as Cordarone or Nexterone), researchers have discovered.S

There ought to be a mechanism to make this kind of information available to the general public. I wonder how many people who have been prescribed these drugs ever go online to research side effects, or read the literature they receive with each prescription. I'd guess this demographic is less likely to do online research, but the sheet that comes with the med? And even if they were aware, would they take precautions?

There are also several plant-based remedies for AF, eg berberine and Arjuna. But I know from experience that the majority are too scared to try anything natural, and will stick with what the doc prescribes. My neighbour is one - she deeply disapproves of medicinal cannabis (she disapproves of all drugs) but takes about 13 different prescribed meds. She also smokes a pack a day and drinks nothing but wine. No 'drugs' for her!

Islander, our local pharmacist is a treasure. He will check if you have had a remedy before, print out the leaflet and encourage you to read it, as well as warning of any serious side effects. He can often save you a visit to the doctor when you have a minor problem.

Sorry about the spacing, can't fix it.

Heart rhythm drugs are especially difficult to calibrate when the patient first begins the drug. The risk of fainting and/or falling declines significantly after the first 90 days, which is about the period of time needed to adjust medication to patient's situation.

Thanks, but, I really can't take credit for the info. I found the original Danish study and it concluded that the risk was greatest within the first 90 days, with the first 2 weeks being especially dangerous. Sorry, I should have attributed my statement to the source....as a good poster should. Lol. Here's the study's summary if interested:

You do deserve credit! You went to the trouble of reading the original Danish study, which none of the rest of us did!
