Default High Radiation CT Scans For Pregnant Women Quadruple In 20 Years

Pregnant women today are getting four times the number of powerful imaging scans a mum-to-be was getting 20 years ago—exposing her and the growing fetus to dangerous levels of radiation.
The biggest increase is in CT (computed tomography) scans, which use high doses of ionizing radiation to create a detailed image of the growing baby.

The use of CT scans has quadrupled in the US, and doubled in Canada, in the last 20 years, researchers at the University of California at San Francisco have discovered.

That's really unsettling. If you already have concerns about your baby, don't expose that child to further risks.

If imaging is necessary, a pregnant woman should request an MRI, as they don't emit ionizing radiation like CT scans. If a CT scan is a must, risks to the baby are highest during early pregnancy, when the fetal organs are forming. So, the longer one can put it off the better for baby. This article noted pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common problem with pregnant women and a common reason for CT scans. I read that a "non-contrast" MRI can be equally effective in detecting PE.
