An Oklahoma judge found Johnson & Johnson guilty in fueling the state's opioid crises and ordered the corporation to pay $572 million in a landmark ruling with vast implications. J&J plans to appeal, of course. And this is only the beginning. Oklahoma is one of dozens of states suing multiple opioid drugmakers. A federal trial slated for this fall combines nearly 2,000 cases involving cities, counties, communities and tribal lands that accuse opioid makers of contributing to or causing the epidemic. These could be tied up in the courts for years.

Edit: the target of 2000 cases is drug maker Purdue Pharma. The cases are being combined into a joint case in Ohio, and Purdue is offering between $10 and $12 billion dollars to settle.
