Default Do Antibiotics Make People Fat?

Evidence suggesting that antibiotics may make people fat is old. As far back as 1955, research published in a leading nutrition journal showed that weight gain may be linked to prolonged antibiotic usage.

The obesity epidemic is rampant, and there are many reasons for this big fat problem. Although asking if antibiotics make us fat may initially sound like some type of joke, recent articles in Scientific American and Science magazine shows that some researchers are taking it seriously.

Antibiotics, generally, have enjoyed a fairly positive reputation. But, recently, here at HH, we've posted studies showing that antibiotics may be linked to colon cancer, can make flu more deadly, and now a connection to obesity. Amazing! I'm not ready to conclude the bloom is off the rose, but I'm beginning to see antibiotics in a totally different light.

Unless people eat organic they are getting antibiotics in their meat. Probably why so many antibiotics are not working anymore, as well as the fact they are over-prescribe.

Two years ago, in January 2017, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration fully implemented rules against the use of antibiotics for food animals (cows, chickens, pigs, etc.) if those antibiotics were deemed important for human medicine. A recent report showed that the sale and distribution of antibiotics used in livestock had decreased by 43% since 2015. Tetracyclines, which account for nearly two thirds of all antibiotics sold for use in livestock, fell by 40% in 2016. Unfortunately, even with these declines in the sale and distribution of antibiotics used in livestock, it still means that (as Julieanne noted) a large percentage of conventionally grown meat still contains antibiotics.
