Default Exercise May Help People With Cardiovascular Disease The Most

New research comparing the benefits of exercise for healthy people versus people with cardiovascular disease found that the latter may benefit the most from being physically active.
A study shows, for the first time, that people with cardiovascular disease benefit more from exercise than healthy people.
Existing evidence shows that staying physically active can help a person live longer and that regular exercise can help prevent many chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease.

Some people are deterred by the thought of "exercise." But frame it as a "physically active lifestyle" as opposed to a sedentary lifestyle and it becomes much more appealing.

I'm happy to see this study. Years ago, my grandfather, who suffered with heart disease, was advised by his doc to not exercise. He was told to take it easy. For people with heart disease, a few exercise do's and don'ts are in order, however. Don't: 1. overdo isometric exercises, like pushups and situps because these type exercises push chest and stomach muscles against the heart muscle; 2. don't work to extremes causing heavy breathing or exhaustion; and 3. don't exercise in extreme temps--too hot or too cold puts extra stress on the body. I have retired neighbors who drive to the air-conditioned mall to "mall walk" on very hot or extremely cold days. Do: 1. warm up slowly with gentle stretching and bending and deep breathing; 2. stay hydrated at all times; and 3. choose less stressful exercises, like mild-pace walking, swimming, and flat stationary cycling. **Key point: each exercise day will be different. Some days you will feel more energetic than others. Go with what your body gives you....listen to your body and pace your exercise accordingly.

That's excellent advice, Mr. Wizard. With inactivity, muscles just atrophy! Mild to moderate exercise motivates the heart to "keep calm and carry on"!
