Default Zantac has low levels of cancer-causing chemical, FDA warns

    September 14, 2019

U.S. health officials said Friday that they are investigating low levels of a potentially dangerous contaminant in the popular heartburn medication Zantac and related generic drugs.

The Food and Drug Administration said in a public statement it has detected a "probable" cancer-causing chemical in ranitidine, the generic term for the medication sold as both prescription and over-the-counter treatments to treat stomach acid and ulcers. The federal agency said the carcinogenic ingredient is a type of nitrosamine called N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA.

The agency said patients can continue taking Zantac and similar heartburn medications for now, but patients using prescription versions who want to stop using them can consult their doctors to discuss other treatments.

This trend of using a drug to treat heartburn is expensive, counterproductive and completely unnecessary; instead of treating an existing condition, it exacerbate it. So let's till this ground one more time.
Heartburn is a bit of acid forced into the esophagus from the stomach. As we age, stomach acid becomes weaker and is not always effective in behaving the way digestive juices are supposed to break down proteins in her stomach. Without enough acid, food begins to ferment, creating gases. These gases can build up, and the increased pressure sometimes forces weak stomach acid out the stomach and into the intestine, causing a burning sensation. A glass of water can often relieve it, or a half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water.
Heartburn can be prevented altogether by taking a glass of water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar stirred into it before dining. That's generally enough to increase stomach acid for the meal that will follow. Simple, right?

Caution: Do not take Zantac and similar heartburn medications, like Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, etc. longer than 2 weeks, unless being closely monitored by a healthcare practitioner. Zantac is a histamine-2 blocker. Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, and others are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They both block the production of gastric (stomach) acid in different ways. However, blocking the production of gastric acid--for longer than 2 weeks--is not a good idea. Long term use of PPIs and H2 blockers has been associated with increased risk of hip fractures, C diff. bacterial infections in the gut, vitamin B-12 deficieny, and a number of other adverse conditions.

And blocking the production of stomach acid only makes the existing condition worse.

Well, I guess Zantac has now made the "big time", as I just now saw a lawyers' ad on TV for Zantac product liability injury suits. Spam not intended: https://lernerandrowe.com/dangerous-...ancer-lawsuit/
