Default Lack Of Sleep Affects Fat Metabolism

American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

We're all a little short on sleep during the work week. A new study adds to the mounting evidence about just how harmful lack of sleep can be. In the Journal of Lipid Research, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report that just a few days of sleep deprivation can make participants feel less full after eating and metabolize the fat in food differently.

In my youth I used to be able to get away with inadequate sleep quite often,"catching up" on weekends (except that one never really catches up on lost sleep). I can't do that in my declining years. I either sleep until I am completely rusted, or get up immediately upon waking — say, 4:30 AM — and then find I need a nap in early afternoon. My body knows my needs better than I do.
Yes, I saw the typo, a result of dictation, but decided it was too funny to correct. I'm generally pretty rusted every day, though.

"....until I'm completely rusted.." Glad you didn't correct it, cause it's too, too funny!!! So, this study used 15 healthy young men in their 20s and "locked" them away for 10 days & nights in a sleep lab. And, they attributed increased weight to lack of sleep. I would attribute it to being 20 somethings bored out of their minds, with nothing to do but eat and sleep. Lol.
