People have used herbs as medicine for thousands of years. Today, with medical researchers continually hunting for better alternative treatments, some are revisiting these remedies. A recent study looks at herbs that people believe can treat hypertension.

Currently, hypertension affects an estimated 1 in 3 adults in the United States.

For years my blood pressure has been super low, about 112/62, but while treating the bursitis in my hips with ibuprofen, it's now up to 135-140. I'm not happy about this, although my doctor is not concerned. I'm hoping that the pain management consult I have next week may enable me to dispense with all NSAIDS.

Many of the popular high blood medications are increasingly being linked to nasty side effects, much like statins. One botanical that's getting a lot of attention for its ability to lower blood pressure is Olive leaf extract. The oleuropein in olive leaf acts as a vasodilator (widens the blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily). Also, the oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) in French grape seed extract have been shown to lower systolic blood pressure and heart rate. Grape seed extract also promotes vasodilation. These are just two of many botanicals that serve to lower blood pressure, without all the nasty side effects of pharmaceuticals.

I was hoping the article would list several specific herbs, but beyond lavender I didn't see many recommendations. I do take Olive leaf twice a day as it has a reputation for lowering A-1 C. It's good to know that it may also be helping to lower my blood pressure for as long as I need to continue with NSAIDs.
