Default Common Antibiotic (fluoroquinolones) Can Trigger Serious Heart Problems

One of the most common antibiotics can trigger two serious heart problems, researchers have just discovered.
Fluoroquinolones, which include Cipro, can cause aortic and mitral regurgitation, where the blood backflows into the heart. The risk is greatest in the first 30 days of taking the drug.
The problem could affect up to 10 per cent of people taking the antibiotics, say researchers at the University of British Columbia. They discovered 12,505 cases of valvular regurgitation among 125,020 people taking the antibiotic and compared them to others taking different antibiotics.

Julieanne, thanks for posting this very important info. about fluoroquinolones. So, we can add heart problems to the long list of side effects from using fluoroquinolones. The biggest problem with these antibiotics is they disrupt collagen production and repair, which weakens blood vessels and causes ruptures. Fluoroquinolones is a "class" of antibiotics that includes any antibiotic that ends with "floxacin," like ciprofloxacin, alumofloxacin, balofloxacin, difloxacin, ecenofloxacin, etc. etc. Fluoroquinolones are also included in brand name medicines, like Penetrex, Maxaquin, etc. **On the subject of heart problems, there is another class of antibiotics, called "macrolides," that can also trigger heart problems. Macrolides are widely prescribed for common illnesses like pneumonia, bronchitis, and some sexually transmitted diseases. Bottom line: fluoroquinolones and macrolides should be avoided whenever possible.

I edited the headline to insert "fluoroquinolones" in order to facilitates searches. I consider the fluoroquinolones (along with statins and bisphosphonates) to be one of the most dangerous classes of drugs on the market. Thanks for posting, Julieanne and Mr. Wiz!
