Sugar sweetened drinks add "empty" calories, promoting weight gain. More importantly, the extra sugar increases the hormone ghrelin, which promotes hunger. So, people end up eating more unnecessary calories, resulting in weight gain. Some people drink sugar-sweetened "energy drinks" while exercising to lose weight. These energy drinks defeat their weight loss efforts.

I read somewhere recently that most fruit juice drinks contain no fruit at all. Think how many parents give "juice boxes" to their toddlers. Sounds like the main ingredients would consist of artificial flavors and sugar.
