    October 30, 2019

Four months into her fight against stage 2 breast cancer, Andrea Cianfrani learned she had a new health challenge to conquer. After recovering from a mastectomy, she received chemotherapy to attack the cancer, not knowing that it was also attacking her heart.
The 40-year-old had heart disease, the #1 cause of death for breast cancer survivors and women overall. More than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors live in the United States, and in about 10% of breast cancer patients, chemotherapy and radiation can damage the heart. It can happen during treatment, or the issue may develop years afterward, reports CBS News medical contributor Dr. Tara Narula, who is a cardiologist.

How unfortunate that treatment for one condition actually exacerbates or creates a new medical condition, sometimes years....years afterward. Truthfully, chemo and radiation can potentially damage more than just the heart. It would be a very tough call for me to submit to this treatment knowing the potential harm it can cause.

My neighbour had congestive heart failure after having chemo. She did recover from it, but eventually died of the cancer, which spread to all parts of her body.

According to the American Cancer Society, a number of chemo drugs, particularly anthracyclines, can cause heart damage and increase risk of heart failure. Likewise, radiation received to the chest increase the risk of heart disease and can persist for at least 20 yrs. after radiation is ended.
