    I have to ask, is there really such a thing as "bad" cholesterol? Don't all forms have a function?

    Great question. Answer: "NO," there is no such thing as "bad" cholesterol. How can LDL cholesterol be bad when it's produced by our liver (75%-80%); is the precursor of major sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone); helps fight infections; helps nerves communicate with each other, etc. How can this be bad? The only problem is when LDL becomes oxidized by cigarette smoking, and/or eating a constant diet of deep fried foods, hydrogenated and/or partially hydrogenated foods, fast food, processed foods, etc. (the SAD diet). In addition, the SAD diet is low in the antioxidant foods (berries, beans, garlic, ginger, red cabbage; dark green leafy veggies, etc.) needed to fight oxidation. So, the LDL becomes oxidized. This causes inflammation, which the immune system works overtime to control. Longtime inflammation is the root cause of almost everything that ails us. LDL cholesterol gets a "bad" reputation through no fault of its own, but it's the lifestyle and harmful dietary habits we subject it to.

    Thank you for that clear explanation. I knew nothing was "bad" about cholesterol but I did know that small, dense particles were supposed to be harmful and I'd forgotten why. So it's our fault after all. And one avocado is probably useless unless it's combined with other healthy choices in our daily diet.

    Absolutely, too many simple carbohydrates, too much sugar, and not enough of foods high in antioxidants wreak havoc on LDL cholesterol.
