Default New FDA Report on Pesticides in Fruits and Vegetables Adds to Growing Public Health C

Last month the Food & Drug Administration published its latest annual analysis of the levels of pesticide residues that contaminate the fruits and veggies and other foods we Americans routinely put on our dinner plates. The fresh data adds to growing consumer concern and scientific debate over how pesticide residues in food may contribute – or not – to illness, disease and reproductive problems.
Over 55 pages of data, charts and graphs, the FDA's "Pesticide Residue Monitoring Program" report also provides a rather unappetizing example of the degree to which U.S. farmers have come to rely on synthetic insecticides, fungicides and herbicides in growing our food.

Unbelievable...the FDA report found trace amounts of DDT, a chemical the federal gov't outlawed in 1972. Wow. The report is rather long, but I want to digest the whole thing. I'll comment more later.

To the best of my understanding, DDT is not used in the U.S. However, we import much of our fruits and vegetables from countries who have no such proscription. I'm guessing that's the origin of any DDT that is detected. Just as some countries refuse to import our GMO grains and other genetically altered products, we should refuse to accept anything that does not meet our own standards.

Your explanation makes sense, given the longtime U.S. ban on DDT. The fruits & veggies identified as having the most chemicals track very closely with the annual report produced by the Environmental Working Group. What's alarming about this report is the acknowledgment that the legal limits for certain ag chemicals have been allowed to continuously increase over time. Shows the influence the chemical lobby has over the FDA and other regulatory agencies.
