Default Superior Fresh obtains non-GMO certification for farmed salmon

Keep in mind, this salmon is genetically modified.

As it plans to expand across the Midwest, Superior Fresh just upped the value of its farmed Atlantic salmon by obtaining non-GMO certification.
The Hixton, Wisconsin, U.S.A.-based aquaponics producer of organic leafy greens and farmed salmon is the first company to offer salmon that is Certified Non-GMO by A Greener World.
Certified Non-GMO by AGW guarantees food is produced without the use of genetically modified feed, supplements or ingredients, and comes from animals raised according to higher animal welfare standards using sustainable agriculture methods, the company said in a press release. AGW’s Salmon Welfare Standards incorporate the United Kingdom’s RSPCA's higher welfare salmon standards.

Farmed fish is bad news, even with a Non-GMO certification. The problems with farmed fish go far beyond the type of diet they consume. As I understand it, farmed Atlantic salmon, typically, is raised off shore in cramped pens. The huge numbers of salmon swimming in these pens don't allow much space for the fish to swim and exercise. Thus, the fish are fattier and less nutritious than wild salmon. These cramp pens are also perfect breeding grounds for toxins, which must be treated with antibiotics and other chemicals. The manufacturer in this article claims not to use GMO feed and other ingredients, but fails to mention how they handle toxins. Importantly, farmed salmon is fed omega-3 and other ingredients that are inherent in wild salmon because farmed salmon aren't free to swim naturally and feed normally. Lastly, there are numerous environmental issues created by farmed fish, but I'll save these for another discussion. Suffice it to say, I'm not a fan of farmed salmon.

I was going to reply to this article re the environmental problems farmed salmon cause, but I'll leave it to you Mr Wiz - your research is more thorough than mine. Over to you!

Julieanne, no need to leave environmental issues to me. I appreciate your perspective on these issues. Also, you have a natural gift for brevity, allowing you to present information comprehensively but succinctly. In other words, you say in 2 sentences what takes me 10 sentences to say, and you say it much better. One of my New Year's resolutions is to strive for brevity...shorter is better.

Wow! Thank you Mr Wiz. I have done some editing in the past, and know the value of cutting out unnecessary words and phrases. But I have never found your posts too long, as they go into detail that is always relevant.

You're much too kind. I wish to get better at your skill of cutting out unnecessary words and phrases.
