Atrazine Spikes Up to 7x EPA Limit, but Utilities Dodge Testing to Stay Legal

WASHINGTON – Seasonal spikes of atrazine – a weed killer that can disrupt hormones and harm developing fetuses – contaminate drinking water in corn-growing areas of the Midwest and beyond, according to an analysis of federal records by the Environmental Working Group.

Environmental Protection Agency data show that in some Corn Belt communities, atrazine levels can spike three to seven times above the legal limit in late spring and early summer. Atrazine was invented in 1958. The EU banned its use 15 yrs. ago in 2004. It is the most widely used herbicide after glyphosate.

And possibly, even more damaging. One of its downsides is that it is so lightweight that it readily spreads when being applied. That affects homeowners living nearby of course, as well as organic growers in the area who are financially damaged, their crops unsalable.

Oh and worse yet, it is used on some residential properties by professional lawncare companies. It's also used on the plush, grassy exclusive golf courses throughout the country. Yep, it's not just limited to agriculture.
