Default Phillippines Approves Genetically Modified Rice That Farmers Don't Want

    December 30 2019

Earlier this month (December 2019) the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines announced that they had approved the genetically modified “Golden Rice” for “direct use as food and feed, or for processing.”
Health Impact News has been covering GM “Golden Rice” for over 8 years now, and the controversy surrounding it. The scientific evidence that GM Golden Rice could improve nutrition and deficiencies in Vitamin A has been very weak, and the product was considered “dead” until the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation intervened in 2011 with $20 million to continue developing the product.

Good grief, I thought the topic of golden rice had finally been dead and buried. Now I see that the dedicated team of Bill and Melinda Gates has resurrected it yet again. Can they not read, interpret and understand why there is no benefit to this product? Let's hope that farmers simply choose not to grow it.

Even with the infusion of $20 million from the Gates Foundation, golden rice has been roundly rejected by many farmers in India, Philippines, and other nations that produce roughly 90 percent of the world's rice. Many farmers in rice producing countries consider golden rice as the medicine that's worse than the illness it's intended to cure.
