Default Do Past Medicines Hold The Answer To Antibiotic Resistance?

Historically, doctors used metals to treat infections. Researchers think that this treatment method may be worth a modern reexamination.

As an increasing number of bacteria develop antibiotic resistance, scientists are looking beyond this family of medications that has served us so well up until now.
As the usefulness of antibiotics begins to wane, there is an urgent need to develop new ways to treat infections.
Now, researchers at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) in Storrs say they may have found a way forward – by looking back at how doctors treated infections before the advent of antibiotics.

Any approach that seems to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria is really encouraging.

The article focuses on "selenium" as a metal that kills infections. In addition to selenium, there are a number of metals that boost the body's immune system and keeps bacterial infections at bay, including copper, manganese (not magnesium), iron, and zinc. In Naturopath lexicon, these metals confer "nutritional immunity." Zinc, for example, is so critical that proper wound healing will not happen without it.

This is particularly interesting because both copper and zinc are among the nutrients I take in my macular degeneration formula.

As I know you aware Islander--but for the sake of those who may not know--copper and zinc compete with each other for absorption. For best results, they should be taken several hours apart. Personally, I alternate days.

Because my macular degeneration formula requires that I take both daily, I simply take one in the morning and the other in the evening.
