Default Kefir Or Yogurt: Which Is Better?

Kefir and yogurt can both offer health benefits because of the beneficial bacteria they contain.
However, kefir may be the better choice, as it has a wider variety of microorganisms.
Kefir and yogurt are both cultured foods that commonly come from dairy products. That said, nondairy alternatives of both foods are now widely available.

I usually have a container of basic yogurt on hand — organic, no sugar or other additives. I've tried kefir, even tried growing it from my own grains, but I just flat out don't like it, not even when it's sweetened. I suppose it comes back to the fact that I don't like milk in any form.

Have you tried water kefir? Made in 48 hours and very pleasant, depending what juice you use to do a second ferment. I use a mixed berry juice, and the process takes me about 8 minutes every two days. I bought the grains on eBay for about $6. It has an impressive list of probiotics. Made with sugar and water, the sugar is mostly taken up by the fungus (?) much like wine, but it could possibly have too much sugar in it for you.

I haven't tried water kefir, mainly because I didn't know anyone in my area who had the grains. In the past I've gotten starters for beverages like kefir and kombucha from people I know. I've been told that grains you order online aren't as complete as something you could access live. If the sugar content is no higher than wine, I'd be willing to try it.

You may be thinking of dried grains - eBay in Oz has both. They seemed to survive well in the few days it took to reach me. Lots of ads for the fresh ones, and they vary a lot in price. Fermenting it a little longer removes more sugar, but not too long or it is less pleasant.

Is there any way you can test for sugar content?

Julie, I have no idea how to test for sugar content. Except by taste, I guess. Knowing how I feel about fluid milk in general, I don't think it's worth the time and expense to try it, only to be disappointed. Now water kefir, OTOH, may be something I'll explore.
