Default What Are The Benefits Of Oregano Oil?

Oregano oil is a product made from the oregano plant, Origanum vulgare. It contains a higher concentration of the helpful compounds that occur naturally in the plant.

This oil is available to use orally, unlike oregano essential oil, which is much more concentrated and used in aromatherapy. People should not take essential oils by mouth.
Whether a person applies it topically or takes an oral supplement, oregano oil may be helpful for a range of conditions.

I strongly advocate the use of oregano oil "extract" for oral use. Oregano oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial. I take it several times per week in a mixture of garlic, ginger, habanero peppers, and liquid zinc to guard against systemic inflammation. The article warns diabetics against using it. This surprised me since I knew oregano oil helped lower blood sugar. The article should have specified people taking diabetic medication, as the two together may lower too much. In addition to being hypoglycemic, oregano oil is also anti-coagulant. So, people taking a blood thinner, like warfarin, may want to proceed with caution. Also, I include dried oregano flakes in almost everything I cook, especially tomato-based dishes.

I have a small bottle I keep for emergencies, like a cold, but have only used it once. I wish I had bought capsules, as it's not pleasant to take - using it as a steam inhaler nearly choked me, it's so strong! I keep it refrigerated in the hope it will last longer. I dry my own oregano, and the flavour is far superior to the bought herb.

Julieanne, I have a relative who uses oregano "essential oil" in her steam inhaler. But, this is different than the oregano oil "extract" that I consume in my mixture. As I understand it, "essential oils" are intended for topical use or aromatherapy, but not to be taken orally. I don't know what my "extract" taste like because it's mixed with the other ingredients.

I forgot to say it was wild oregano oil I was referring to, extremely strong and quite expensive ($40AUD). The dried oregano I use for cooking only. I was given some essential oil, but haven't tried it yet. The 'wild' herb was effective at getting rid of a cold some time ago, taken orally.

"Wild" oregano oil is the best, as it's the highest in carvacol & thymol--the 2 active ingredients that confer all the medicinal benefits. That's why it's expensive.

Can someone give me the dilution ratio of oregano oil to carrier oil?
