Default NYC Bicyclists Are Killing Pedestrians! This Is Why The City Won’t Stop It

    September 1, 2019

Mayor Bill de Blasio has aggressively promoted a bike-friendly agenda, adding about 100 miles of dedicated cycling routes amid a spike in bike crashes, but little has been done to tackle the risk posed by bikers themselves.

Since 2011, according to statistics from the City Transportation Department, bicyclists have wounded more than 2,250 pedestrians— including at least seven who died — and published accounts.
Injuries are up 12 percent this year, increasing from 113 over the same period in 2018 to 127 through June 30 according to the NYP

7 deaths over 8 yrs. doesn't sound disproportional to the city's population. I think an over-crowded city of more than 8 million people is bad place to promote biking. International cities with high numbers of cyclists have far fewer people, like the bike capitol of the world--Copenhagen with 1.2 million people--and Amsterdam with 860,000, and Norway with 670,000. Biking is big in Paris, with around 2 million people. Are bike owners required to carry insurance like car owners. If not, perhaps that's an idea whose time has come??

The digital weekly must be hard up for news if this is the best they can provide. I also suspect that English is not Mr. Gupta's first language. Or that they can't afford to keep a proofreader on staff. Or possibly both.
It would appear that the largest number of injuries are to people who have put themselves directly in the paths of the cyclists, actually walking in the bike lanes. Putting yourself in harm's way invite harm. And do we ever find out why the city won't stop it?

Knowing the pandemonium that is Manhattan, one practical suggestion would be to raise the wages of delivery cyclists. They are reimbursed a pittance for each delivery so it is to their advantage to crowd as many as they can into every hour, which means weaving through dangerous traffic, pedaling the wrong way up one-way streets and so forth. It's a situation asking for trouble.
➤ Happiness is the frosting on the cake of contentment.

"It's a situation asking for trouble." Solution; take the "'A' Train"
