High-dose vitamin D supplements appear to aggravate inflammation and myelin loss in the brain and spinal cord, and worsen the disability associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), a study in a mouse disease model reported.

Excessive use of vitamin D causes calcium levels to spike, which directly increase the inflammatory state of immune cells and their capacity to infiltrate the central nervous system (CNS; the brain and spinal cord), the researchers observed.

So, the culprit here is "high-dose" vit. D3, which researchers defined as 250 nmol. That's high. The research didn't mention the use of vit. K2, which would have helped somewhat to control the calcium spikes. But, on a larger scale, I think this study demonstrates that researchers are still trying to fully understood D3, which the body converts into a steroid hormone called calcitriol. This hormone, in addition to regulating calcium, also plays a role in cell growth, neuromuscular functions, immune functions, reduction of inflammation, and many other bodily functions.

I have to remark that 75,000 IU/kg of vitamin D3 for 15 weeks is what I would call a staggering overdose. Sweet Lord, who in their right mind would take a supplement that size for that length of time? I'd say the experimenters were going to extremes to prove a point.
