Default Curcumin Is The Spice Of Life When Delivered By Tiny Nanoparticles

For years, curry lovers have sworn by the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric, but its active compound, curcumin, has long frustrated scientists hoping to validate these claims with clinical studies.
The failure of the body to easily absorb curcumin has been a thorn in the side of medical researchers seeking scientific proof that curcumin can successfully treat cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's and many other chronic health conditions

Turmeric--and its major component curcumin--are hard for the body to absorb because they are "fat soluble" nutrients. The digestive track tends to be more "watery," reducing curcumin absorption. So, taking curcumin with healthy oils, for example, will increase absorption. In addition to nanoparticles, liposomes also enhance absorption because liposomes are composed of fats (phospholipids). Also, the absorption of curcumin is significantly higher when taken with black pepper, which contains piperine. Piperine slows down the breakdown of curcumin, leaving more in the system for longer periods of time, resulting in greater absorption.

Maybe we need a recipe for liposomal curcumin?

It might be of interest to note that in traditional Indian cooking, the herbs such as coriander, cumin, turmeric, etc. always are sauteed in ghee or in other fat prior to adding the vegetables and other ingredients.

Thanks Maurya for the tip on sauteeing turmeric in ghee. This certainly adds credence to fat being needed for better absorption.

Thanks Mr Wiz. From what I have read I'm not sure now about using my stick blender, but I will read more about this topic.

Maurya, I always saute spices in oil before adding more ingredients. This is to bring out the flavour - I have never seen any reference to health benefits. But many ethnic cuisines seem to be founded on healthy eating, eg beans and rice, balancing carbs and protein. We in the west are only just becoming aware of this.

Agree. We in developed, diverse cultures today have forgotten and left behind much of the best of the ethnic cooking of our ancestors. Consider that the fundamental basics of Mexican food are corn and beans which, eaten together, supply the amino acids that make a complete protein.
