Default Bacteria Killed By New Light Activated Coating

    University College London
    March 5, 2020

A new coating that activates in low intensity light to kill bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli has been developed.

To stop the spread of disease, it could be used to coat phone screens and keyboards, as well as the inside of catheters and breathing tubes, which are a major source of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs).

A "coating of light." Science continues to get more dramatically inconceivable. Do they spray it on?

'Light-activated' coating. Is crystal violet the same as the gentian violet we used way back? Kids came to school with purple knees, arms etc. That and iodine were the common antiseptics.

This doesn't answer your question, but when I asked my doctor how to treat my toenail fungus, he suggested gentian violet 3 to 4 times a week. I know I touched on this somewhere in another reply so I won't bother to point out anything beyond the fact that no pharmacist in our area had ever heard of it!

I just learned GV is banned in Australia, don't know why. Maybe the same situation in the US?

Two minutes searching showed me GV and crystal violet are the same.

GV is clearly not banned in the USA, since a quick Google search will show its availability from any number of sources, including Walmart which is where I ordered mine. If I need a refill, I can probably get it cheaper from iherb, even with shipping charges.

iherb don't charge me for shipping, as long as I spend $40-$50, all too easy to do. Is it not the same in US?

Very likely, Julieanne. The thing is, I rarely order from them so I would have trouble building an order of that size. I get free shipping from vitacost with a $25 minimum on their house brand, and that's easy to meet when I only order every few months. However, having been charged $12 for a bottle from Walmart that's already half gone, I will probably try my chances with iherb and perhaps do better, ship shipping costs and all.
