Default New York Hospitals Treating Coronavirus Patients With Vitamin C

    March 24 2020

Seriously sick coronavirus patients in New York states largest hospital system are being given massive doses of vitamin C based on promising reports that its helped people in hard-hit China, The Post has learned.
Dr. Andrew G. Weber, a pulmonologist and critical-care specialist affiliated with two Northwell Health facilities on Long Island, said his intensive-care patients with the coronavirus immediately receive 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C.
Identical amounts of the powerful antioxidant are then readministered three or four times a day, he said.

Great to see vitamin C is being considered. I hope the good doc knows that "high dose" IV vit. C is not for everyone, especially patients with kidney disease and those with hemochromatosis--a condition when the body stores too much iron. Vit. C increases the uptake of iron. Also, an antioxidant, called Quercetin, has proven anti-viral and anti-inflammatory. Many vitamin C supplements also contain quercetin because the synergy of the two work wonders against flu viruses.

Is '1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C' a massive dose? Many of us take more than this daily. Is intravenous vitamin C different to oral Vitamin C? I thought much higher doses were used in this procedure.

Apparently so, as 1500mg of Vit C IV directly into the vascular system is far more effective than 1500 mg Vit C oral supplementation, and avoiding bowel tolerance problems also. And that choice can apply to any other supplement as well, since I get alphalipoic acid (ALA) monthly in IV form, as opposed to buying and taking ALA orally obtained from various pharmacies or mail order. And I might add that Vit C IVs are also provided at my integrative doctors' clinic.

I,too, wondered how they arrived at 1,500 mg. Doesn't seem massive to me, especially considering Dr. Linus Pauling used up to 10,000 mg. (10 grams) of IV vit. C in his treatment of cancer patients, who suffered no adverse effects at the 10 gram level. I've read that one Chinese trial used IV vitamin C at 2,000 mg., 3 times per day.

Note that the article specifies: "Identical amounts of the powerful antioxidant are then readministered three or four times a day."

I applaud this doctor for using Vitamin C. It's hard to understand why more hospitals and health care providers don't try it. It's not as though we even needed results from the Chinese experiment to know that Vitamin C greatly helps almost any infectious disease. Successful studies and results have been around for decades.

So you say, and if I had to look, I would probably find some. But when I put this on Facebook this morning, one of the first responses was that no studies had ever been done. I had to point to Shanghai, where studies were done and where their equivalent of the CDC had actually recommended mega vitamin C to treat COVID19. Consider that at the moment, there is no treatment for COVID19, so one would think that any treatment that alleviates the effects of the virus would be welcomed. But the cascade of fake news and scams for approaches to cure the virus would apparently make everyone apprehensive about anything outside main stream science. Sometimes, we also have to explain that the media are run by a mere six corporations; that the pharmaceutical industry is one of the media's biggest cash cows; and that big Pharma does not like to see competition. Consequently, "natural" or dietary approaches to prevention and treatment are consistently debunked.

There was a brief mention on an NPR report this afternoon from some CDC person, congratulating themselves on shutting down some advertising for IV ascorbate. Aren't they just wonderful in the way they protect the population? (Sarcasm font turned on.)

I'm of the mind that even in multiple doses per day, 1500 mg of ascorbate is not a massive dose at all. Not nearly what is needed to fortify a body that is already immune-weak, even before serious complications of the virus or any other disease are detected. I'll make separate post, with link, on some very interesting facts about vitamin C, and whether it's even more efficient to take IV, and whether an oral dose of ascorbic acid is better or less effective than sodium ascorbate.

Hullo Stoneharbor, and an asterisk **. Since my Facebook is full of coronavirus stories, I've been able to reprint two more articles about NYC hospitals using IV-C for COVID-19. I'm not sure of the dosage but the important story was their willingness to adopt nutritional therapy, for which I was promptly chastised; I actually put a friendship at risk for adhering to the belief that there is a proven therapeutic value to vitamin C. Aren't we all what we eat? Or has that old adage been totally forgotten?
I had the flu only once, in 1964, (never a flu shot) and I haven't had a cold in dozens of years. When I feel a bit of a sore throat coming on, I ramp up my 4g of C/day to a gram an hour around the clock. The next morning any suggestion of a symptom has gone, but here's the interesting part: at 18 or more grams/day, I have never reached bowel tolerance. That is inarguable proof that when your body is under attack, it will make use of all the C you can push in!

    **I know, I know, I'm guilty... But I haven't forgotten!
