Default Physical Distancing And Good Hand Hygeine: Australia Flu Cases Drop By More Than 99%

    Matt Woodlay
    June 5 2020

There were only 208 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza nationwide last month – compared to 30,567 at the same time in 2019.
The major disparity follows a trend that has seen a massive decrease in cases since social distancing measures were implemented across Australia in response to the coronavirus.

In the first two months of 2020, Australia was on track to surpass its record-breaking start to 2019, before cases essentially halved in March compared with the same time last year. This was followed by an even more dramatic 98% drop in April, when only 307 laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded compared to 18,691 in the corresponding period in 2019.

This is great news. Some experts were speculating that influenza cases would soar as a result of physical distancing and staying at home. Apparently, the immune system weakens over time when staying away from others and/or remaining at home. This obviously does not appear to be the case.

I have said to several people that I hoped 'flu cases would be lower with all the physical distancing and increased awareness re hand hygiene. This is good news.

We are just about back to normal re Covid - no cases in hospital and only 30 active cases. So the restrictions, which most people accepted, worked for us. But wearing masks is voluntary, and few people wear them, which makes me wonder about the value of masks for the general public.

I'm so happy to hear that Australia is "just about back to normal." I'm hoping--perhaps stupidly--with growing numbers of countries getting back to normal that the demand to vaccinate the global population will be greatly reduced.

As it stands now, even with all the fear and panic generated by a deadly pandemic, only roughly 50% of Americans would willingly get vaccinated against COVID-19 when such a vaccine becomes available.

I hope the media publicizes the fiasco that was the 1976 swine flu vaccine, mandated for every American. The vaccine failed miserably because it was "rushed to market" by an Administration that was up for re-election later that year. Before stopping the ill-advised vaccine program 2 months after it began, many of the 45 million vaccinated Americans complained of being sick, a handful died, and almost 500 people developed Guillian-Barre Syndrome--a nervous system disorder. Before making the vaccine available to the public, manufacturers demanded the federal government indemnify them against all claims for adverse reactions from the vaccine. So, hopefully the media will inform the public about the 1976 mandatory vaccine fiasco, and that 50% of Americans willing to get vaccinated will drop precipitously!!

Mr. Wizard, surely you know that the media will do no such thing. This site has captured and posted a sticky thread above the vaccine forum of a "60-Minute" segment and a video about that 1976 disaster… That have never been shown again.
