The COVID-19 episode will likely lead to a large, lasting baby bust. The pandemic has thrust the country into an economic recession. Economic reasoning and past evidence suggest that this will lead people to have fewer children. The decline in births could be on the order of 300,000 to 500,000 fewer births next year. We base this expectation on lessons drawn from economic studies of fertility behavior, along with data presented here from the Great Recession of 2007-2009 and the 1918 Spanish Flu.

Yep. This is highly likely. And, the fewer babies born during the Great Recession of '07 - '09 will reverberate through society. For example, colleges & universities are already planning for fewer admissions in 2025 -2027 years due to the lack of births. With all due respect, I think fewer babies in the world is not all bad.

Of course the loss of loved ones is sad. But any reduction in population is a positive for the planet and its remaining inhabitants.

AMEN! Any sane, civilized, and constitutional global population stabilization is sorely needed, not (necessarily) because of too many people per square mile, (a more local or regional problem), but rather because of too many people draining the Earth's clean and safe, finite and fragile natural resources, that various corrupt entities, (in bed with gov.) are trying to compensate for with shoddy, polluting, and toxic, non-organic foods and agriculture, and poorly mass produced products, as well as dangerous medical products and services.
