Default Showering daily — is it necessary?

Do you shower or bathe daily? If you do, you’re not alone.
Approximately two-thirds of Americans shower daily. In Australia it’s over 80%. But in China, about half of people report bathing only twice a week.
In the US, the daily shower tends to start around puberty and becomes lifelong. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself why?

My answer would have been an emphatic "Yes" before reading this article. Now, I could be persuaded otherwise. Lot of food for thought!!

Remember when pioneers worked hard all week, bathed on Saturday night and went to church all clean and pressed on Sunday morning?
That was still the practice when I was a child growing up in southern New Hampshire. None of the many homes we lived in had an actual shower, but everyone had a bath on Saturday night. If someone was particularly hot and dirty midweek, that person might take a quick bath in a few inches of water; we called that a "shower." Even when I went to college, there were showers in the dormitories but few people use them daily.
Old patterns die hard. I had never been in the habit of showering, so as a young adult in grad school and later, out in the working world, I lived in apartments with showers but only took one once or possibly twice a week. Of course the farming life is different. I am frequently in a hot mess… Tossing bales of hay, turning a compost pile, shearing sheep, getting down and dirty in the garden... and when you are hot and sweaty and prickly with dust and dirt, an evening shower is a necessity.
But I learned something from Mercola when he talked about sun exposure and vitamin D. He emphasized that bathing with soap after tanning actually undid all the benefits by washing away that layer of oil on the skin's surface that enables you to metabolize the rays of the sun and turn them into the D hormone. If you must shower, he said, shower with temperate water and use soap only on the "pits and bits." And now we know, of course, that showering with soap washes away the protective bacteria on the skin's surface as well.
    I feel vindicated.

I remember lining up for the old "Saturday night bath." Before the bath, we had to take a teaspoon of castor oil to keep us regular. I hated taking the castor oil and did almost anything to avoid taking it.

Personal experience testifies that that is wicked bad stuff. As a four-year-old, though, I was given cod liver oil and I distinctly remember the mostly pleasant flavor. Apparently my dad was savvier about vitamin D than I was aware of later... Or maybe back then, all kids were given cod liver oil.

During WW2 in Britain, cod liver oil and concentrated orange juice were only available to children up to the age of five. But I remember having to take it occasionally, so it was probably eked out among the three kids. Disgusting stuff!

Hmm. Maybe that explains why I was given it too, because I was at the right age during the war years. And I remember thinking the taste was not unpleasant.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference. I take a quick shower daily but only wash my hair 2 or 3 days a time as washing hair daily will make it dry I found out.

I'd say it goes beyond personal preference when research shows that daily bathing removes a protective coating from our skin. As long as I continue to be clean and sweet-smelling, I don't see the necessity to bathe daily.

For me it is sort of personal. In the tropics in the summertime, I really can't stand myself if I don't at least rinse off daily. I always was taught to use soap only on "pits, parts, and feet", and I still use that rule for myself.
