    Default Venting in the Blogspot

Advisory: because this is the Blogspot where opinions are allowed, I'm going to call Executive Privilege and violate a rule. You will recognize my transgression when you see it because it is inextricably connected with the topic I'm about to vent on.

I've been a long-time member of mercola.com, possibly as many as 15 years. At one time I achieved a halo — that golden trophy on a lavender badge, star poster. I couldn't flaunt it for long because you know me, I speak my mind, and though I do it tactfully and diplomatically, the truth will out, and invariably I am dropped to the bottom of the page, shamed and humiliated, banned again. After the last banning I chose not to return, waiting for over a month, during which Covid topics dominated. I cleared my cookies and re-joined a few days ago because something aroused my concern.

Some things never change: Gui dominates roughly 50% of the page. However, the badges/ratings have disappeared although oddly, the like/dislike options are still available. There are now only three styles of badge. The "Savvy" badge, red/black, belongs to Stanley, Almond and Gui although to my surprise he was totally absent today. The yellow badge, "Expert," is awarded to honored guests and doubtless to the good doctor himself, when he appears. Users with a green "Moderator" badge are "members of the Mercola team. It is their job to assist in answering questions from the community and to ensure the flow of conversation on the board remains on topic." That's mildly interesting because on a day when vitamin D was the topic, the page was peppered with questions that I could have answered, but no moderator appeared to provide the desired response.

Now, my concern. Today's (6/25) headline was "Lockdown and Social Distancing: A 'Whopper' Hoax?" and the topic was "Why Social Distancing Should Not Be the New Normal." A day or two ago a similar stance was taken on masking. Simultaneously, the last few issues of GMI (GreenMedInfo) espoused the same positions. Is this independent thinking, or is Sayer Ji following his mentor? In either case, they are advocating resistance to mainstream medical advice. And it's clear that in states where this advice has been relaxed, covid cases have immediately rebounded. My jaw dropped when I saw this coming from two medical professionals whom I had respected despite our occasional differences. It appears to me that Mercola, at least, is becoming increasingly conspiratorial, closer to Mike Adams than to any other respected alternative medical figure... And for that reason I worry about his influence over tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of readers.

When I logged on this morning there were only about 30 comments; looking in just now, the day's total is 268. Someone with too much time on their hands might find it amusing to do a count of which comments fall on which side of the question. I'm going to stop here because my only purpose was to alert you of this rather frightening change in direction from some influential figures. However, scrolling through the morning comments I found three that were enlightening. I'll post them below for the curious. Thanks for listening!

    *********

At one time I referred my patients to literature by Dr. Mercola. Most recently, I find the 'References/Sources' are often inadequate (at best), and conclusions within the articles authored by Dr. Mercola are too often taken out of context. Dr. Mercola, you can do better. You have a brilliant mind and I'm disappointed by the past several publications you've put out. Namaste, Dr. Iankowitz DNP, RN, FNP-BC, Director, Holistic and Integrative Healing LLC.

This article jumps precipitously from questioning the percentage of susceptible individuals and the growth rate of Covid-19 to claiming a global capitalist conspiracy, with minimal evidence. I respect Dr. Mercola's opinion on health issues immensely but suggest that he avoid getting embroiled in conspiracy theories lest he lose his credibility.

I suggest that Dr. Mercola stop using the word "hoax" in these articles, as it appears to endorse the actions of President Trump due to his overuse of the term. Whatever you think of social distancing, the curve of the pandemic in the United States should be laid squarely at the feet of Trump. From the message to his base that " I don't wear masks," to the June rallies, his behavior has exacerbated the infection rate and rendered the use of masks and social distancing ineffectual even while we paid the extreme costs of the shutdown. At the same time, other countries have virtually eliminated the virus through consistent leadership.

And here we have GMI on June 25 with this headline: "Why is everyone wearing masks when the science doesn't prove effectiveness?"

I am reluctant to post anything from Sayer Ji after seeing his repeated dismissals of current science. The site is also running advertising for the first time. Is this the desire for another income stream — or is the site seriously losing support? These seem like strange responses to ongoing censorship attacks from both mainstream media and social media.

Here's the latest in this trend to defy mainstream medical advice that has generally been recognized as indisputable. This article has been re-printed at least once, based on what I see in my inbox.
OSHA SAYS MASKS DON'T WORK -- AND VIOLATE OSHA OXYGEN LEVELS
    Thursday, June 18, 2020
    GMI Reporter

Peggy Hall from www.TheHealthyAmerican.org explains how the US. Department of Labor Occupational and Safety and Health Administration's guidelines clearly show cloth and surgical masks don't work to reduce transmission of COVID-19, and how they deplete the body of oxygen causing adverse health effects. Now, here is OSHA's actual stance on the question of face coverings:
    COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions

    Cloth Face Coverings

Should workers wear a cloth face covering while at work, in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation for all people to do so when in public?
OSHA generally recommends that employers encourage workers to wear face coverings at work. Face coverings are intended to prevent wearers who have Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) without knowing it (i.e., those who are asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic) from spreading potentially infectious respiratory droplets to others. This is known as source control.
Consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation for all people to wear cloth face coverings when in public and around other people, wearing cloth face coverings, if appropriate for the work environment and job tasks, conserves other types of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as surgical masks, for healthcare settings where such equipment is needed most.
Employers have the discretion to determine whether to allow employees to wear cloth face coverings in the workplace based on the specific circumstances present at the work site. For some workers, employers may determine that wearing cloth face coverings presents or exacerbates a hazard. For example, cloth face coverings could become contaminated with chemicals used in the work environment, causing workers to inhale the chemicals that collect on the face covering. Over the duration of a work shift, cloth face coverings might also become damp (from workers breathing) or collect infectious material from the work environment (e.g., droplets of other peoples' infectious respiratory secretions). Workers may also need to use PPE that is incompatible with the use of a cloth face covering (e.g., an N95 filtering facepiece respirator).
Where cloth face coverings are not appropriate in the work environment or during certain job tasks (e.g., because they could become contaminated or exacerbate heat illness), employers can provide PPE, such as face shields and/or surgical masks, instead of encouraging workers to wear cloth face coverings. Like cloth face coverings, surgical masks and face shields can help contain the wearer's potentially infectious respiratory droplets and can help limit spread of COVID-19 to others.
Note that cloth face coverings are not considered PPE and cannot be used in place of respirators when respirators are otherwise required.
Learn more about cloth face coverings on the CDC website.
Employers should consider evaluating their accessible communication policies and procedures to factor in potentially providing masks with clear windows to facilitate interaction between employees and members of the public who need to lip-read to communicate.

And just to confirm: We Have a Cheap, Effective Way to Keep Ourselves Safer From COVID-19. Why Are We Fighting About It?
    Gavin Yamey
    June 29, 2020

Yamey is a physician and professor of global health and public policy at Duke University, where he directs the Center for Policy Impact in Global Health.

At long last, we have made a truly game-changing scientific breakthrough in preventing the spread of COVID-19. The impact of this breakthrough seems almost too good to be true.
We have found a disease control tool that, when used properly, can dramatically reduce the person-to-person transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Studies have shown that this tool could reduce transmission by somewhere between 50% and 85%. The tool is cheap and remarkably low-tech. You can even make one at home. It has no significant side effects. And with each passing day, the scientific research showing the tool’s effectiveness gets stronger and stronger.
If this tool were a vaccine or medicine, we’d be high-fiving each other and popping the champagne, knowing we’d discovered a crucial means to help prevent the spread of the pandemic.
I’m talking, of course, about face masks—cloth, surgical, or even a bandanna.
