Default BLM Protests Did Not Cause An Uptick In Covid-19 Cases

    The Economist
    June 30 2020

DEMONSTRATING CAN be a dangerous activity, even in the best of circumstances. During a pandemic, it can be lethal. When mass protests against police brutality broke out in America earlier this month, following the death of George Floyd at the hands of policemen in Minneapolis, public-health experts worried they would lead to a surge in infections. Anthony Fauci, a leading member of the White House’s coronavirus task-force, called the protests “the perfect set-up” for the spread of the virus. Eric Garcetti, the mayor of Los Angeles, warned that the gatherings could become “super-spreader events”.

This is great news, if true. Personally, I struggle with the conclusion that protests did not cause an "uptick" in COVID cases. Crowds of essentially un-masked people, gathered closely in tight spaces, chanting, and yelling seems to be the exact opposite of everything we've been told we need to do to protect ourselves from COVID. Perhaps, it's too soon to identify an "uptick." Time will tell???

I really dislike the word 'uptick'. What happened to 'rise"?

I think Mr. Wizard is right, it's a bit too soon to tie the rise in infections to protests and demonstrations. Physical closeness is bad enough, but singing and shouting intensify the clouds of viruses riding on our breath and filling the atmosphere around us. Multiply that by hundreds, sometimes even thousands, and the outcome should be totally predictable
