Default 'Outrageous': Global Anger @ Trump Admin Buying up COVID-19 Drug Supply

    7/1/20

Public health experts in the U.K. and Australia have expressed alarm at the move by the U.S. to purchase almost the entire global supply of a drug to treat the coronavirus.
Remdesivir, made by Gilead, was originally trialled during the Ebola epidemic and is the first drug that has been approved by licensing authorities in the U.S. to treat COVID-19 after trials showed that it helped some recover from the disease more quickly.

The Trump administration has purchased more than 500,000 doses, which is all of Gilead's production of the drug for this month and 90 percent of its projected supply for August and September. It is made under patent to Gilead, at a cost of around $3,200 per treatment of six doses for richer countries.
However the move by the U.S. to buy almost all stocks has angered Andrew Hill, senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University, especially as the drug was one of two tested in the U.K. which now may not get access to remdesivir until October.

Sadly, this action is in keeping with the unfortunate "America First" mantra of the current administration. On May 4, 2020, world leaders met virtually and pledged $8 Billion to fight COVID-19, including the development of vaccine that would be shared by all. **The U.S. skipped the meeting!! Stating days later that it was in support of the international effort.

I hesitated to post this a couple of days ago, as it verged on politics. I remember he also wanted to buy up all the vaccines if one was successful. Well, the US is welcome to them!

While this does verge into politics, it's politics that comes with huge international "health" implications!

For four years, the U.S. mainstream media and "legacy" media have been tiptoeing around Donald Trump's misstatements, trying to find acceptable euphemisms for the words "lies" and "liar." Those courtesies are over; it's no longer possible to gloss over what the entire world recognizes and frequently satirizes. We seem to have arrived at the point where it's not even possible to report on topics of health and wellness without including references to the current administration of the United States in all its improbable excesses.

So I'm going to make an executive decision. This is not to be understood as a rule change; I am not encouraging political discussions anywhere on the site. What I am saying is that it's ludicrous to try to avoid mentioning a name when a story is in fact based on the name of a particular political figure... And when momentous decisions with far-reaching, even global, consequences are made by the president of the United States, trying to avoid naming him is just petty.

Since this comment is buried inside a thread where it's not readily visible, I am going to repeat it in the Announcement forum.
