Default New Class Of Safer Analgesics Discovered

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center
    July 6 2020

Researchers at LSU Health New Orleans Neuroscience Center of Excellence and colleagues have discovered a new class of pipeline drugs to relieve pain and reduce fever without the danger of addiction or damage to the liver or kidneys. The research is published online in the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Current drugs have unwanted side effects. Opioids can not only cause addiction; recent studies have shown they can be no more effective at relieving pain than non-narcotic drugs. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) can cause kidney damage. Acetaminophen is an effective drug, but overuse can result in liver damage.

I can't wait that long! As an analgesic, acetaminophen does almost nothing for me.

Studies on new pain medications continue to surface, but nothing ever seems to come of them. Opiates, like morphine, have been around for 200 years, and NSAIDs, like aspirin for over 120 years. They've survived this long because they work!! People in pain want and need reliable painkillers.

Acetaminophen only works for relatively mild pain I find. It is apparently more effective when taken with paracetamol - one of each. Unfortunately, opioids are still needed for very strong pain, eg after surgery.

A combination of paracetamol and codeine used to be available OTC in Australia, but now only with a prescription. It is useful to keep as a 'backup' for stronger pain, like toothache. My doctor prescribed some for me, as he knows I'm responsible - I have had them for about a year!

But Julieanne, aren't acetaminophen and paracetamol the same thing? In which case, taking them together would be a double dose of Tylenol, potentially harmful to the liver.

Yes they are - I get confused with the different terms used in Britain, Oz and US. What I meant was a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol. Sorry for the confusion!
