Default Older Children Spread The Virus Just As Much As Adults, Large Study Finds

The study of nearly 65,000 people in South Korea suggests that school reopenings will trigger more outbreaks.

In the heated debate over reopening schools, one burning question has been whether and how efficiently children can spread the virus to others.
A large new study from South Korea offers an answer: Children younger than 10 transmit to others much less often than adults do, but the risk is not zero. And those between the ages of 10 and 19 can spread the virus at least as well as adults do.
The findings suggest that as schools reopen, communities will see clusters of infection take root that include children of all ages, several experts cautioned.

This is a very important topic, influencing whether or not schools reopen. Here's a link to a reasoned article, backed up by statistics, which posits that the numbers of the South Korean study don't really back up the conclusions drawn therefrom. I recommend reading it to round out our understanding of the article posted and the study itself. https://thefederalist.com/2020/07/22...g-coronavirus/

As for children and COVID-19, I'm not throwing my common sense to the wind. Nobody knows the truth when it comes to kids. Fact: The American Academy of Pediatrics reports over 240,000 children have contracted COVID-19, as of July 16.
Of the 43 states reporting data, 19 states have reported at least one (1) child death due to COVID.

**Schools have been closed in most states for four (4) months, which greatly suppress transmission. We'll have a much better picture of COVID and children once, or if, schools reopen. A National Academy of Sciences study reported that people who are asymptomatic and/or pre-symptomatic are responsible for almost 50% of COVID infections. This may be true with children too, but we don't know because most health professionals are not testing asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic children. Bottom line: I'm not convinced that we know much of anything about children and COVID at this point in time.

Whether or not to re-open schools maybe the most challenging question that developed countries face this fall.

Pattypans, that federalist story is deeply disturbing. I've shared it with my younger daughter whose many years as a teacher and administrator have ended with her self-employment as an educational consultant. I trust her judgment above all others so I'm waiting to hear her response.

Here's the CDC's take on the subject of children and Covid and reopening schools, updated July 23:"The Importance of Reopening America’s Schools this Fall"

Re thefederalist: calling it the 'Wuhan virus' was not a good start, even US politicians have stopped calling it that. Phrases like 'screaming headlines' and 'panic porn parade' don't help. I read a couple of articles below this and it seems to be extremely political.

So glad I don't have young children now and don't have to make this decision.

Julieanne, be that as it may, I think the most important question is, Is it true what the article says about children and Covid? The NYT is political, too, and that's the important question regarding the original article as well: Is it true?

I have Facebook family, friends and researchers all looking into this since it seems to have caused quite a storm. I do agree that the Federalist is not the ideal source for reliability. I'll come back with more info if and when I have some.

Pattypans, that CDC article is an excellent collection of reasons to open schools; I think we can all agree on those points. The real issue is risk versus benefit. The benefits are easy to itemize, the risks, not so much. We do know that older children can be carriers. I won't attempt to list all the possible risks, but let's include infecting classmates, infecting teachers who then have to quarantine, finding substitute teachers to cover for quarantined teachers, teachers and children bringing the virus home to elders or others with comorbidities. Although every school district and every state is going to fashion its own approach to schooling children, my guess is that many will be "hybrid" situations that will supplement public education with intermittent or periodic scheduled online teaching.
